I just saw there is a new version of iTunes with no Apple store and said something about you could only download apps on an iOS device. I've read various comments about it, but there seems to be a lot of confusion and are definitely things that worry me. So maybe some people here are using it and can provide clarification.
One of my big concerns is that I want my apps and stuff backed up to my computer! Sure, I have iCloud backup too, but it is my computer where I always want access.
Related, if you can only download to the iOS device, does it get backed up to the computer in some way like it used to?
Another is about changing what is loaded onto any particular device. In iTunes, I go to the app page (will that still be there?) for the device and I can tell any app to install or be removed. Quick and easy, and I can see them more easily on a big screen. Then just sync.
If I can't select such things on the computer, it is going to be a bear on the iOS device! I have hundreds of apps and I sometimes change which ones I use. If I have to seek them out from prior purchases on an iPhone, that's going to be very inefficient!
Also, if you can't back up to the computer or something, what happens to your data for an app, like game scores and progress? One of the things that used to really tick me off when I'd go to the Apple store about a problem was that they'd typically say something like, "Restore as 'new', but don't reload from your backup because it may contain the problem. Which meant all my scores disappeared and I'd have to start all over. Not nice when you have some of the highest scores in the world out of millions of players! So I don't want to run into the same problem with this.
Plus, a backup on your computer lets you reinstall in even if an app is completely removed from the Apple store.
Until I learn more about this, I'm not updating! Trouble is, an update to iTunes will likely be required for the OS update.
